Number 14 brings us back to May for the Four-Ball Championship, with an incredible 18th hole up and down by the team of James Kroeger and Alex Stimpson:
Unbeknownst to Stimpson and Kroeger, the outcome was still very much in question heading down the stretch as they were just one ahead of Higgins and Stewart, who were sitting in the clubhouse with a score of 11-under par 133.
On that final hole, Stimpson sent his tee shot over the green while Kroeger found his shot in the bunker. With his partner eyeing a three-foot bogey putt, Kroeger knocked his ball out of the bunker and then drained a 30-foot par putt.
What they thought was icing on the cake turned out to be a winning shot.
“We honestly thought that we had a three or four shot lead,” said Kroeger. “I was thinking that we were fine and then we come to find out that we needed it. It was fun, but I feel like the difference was the way we played on that back nine.”
It was an especially sweet moment for the two friends who for years had been colleagues at the Acushnet Company when they both worked in the Manchester Lane Testing Center.

“Alex and I don’t get a chance to play a lot,” said Kroeger. “Individual tournaments are really tough to prepare for properly, but in a four-ball you have a partner to feed off of and you tend to play better.”
Earlier this year, Kroeger took a new position in the Acushnet Company headquarters and now serves as the Team Titleist Social Media Coordinator.
They savored the victory today but also their time together.
“This is just a great tournament,” said Stimpson. “You have colleagues, weekend guys, and brothers out here and it is just people going out and having fun and that is what the four-ball is all about.”
Are you serious with that back 9?! #birdiesonbirdies |
